All about the year of the Tiger

The Tiger is the third animal of the zodiac and the sign of Yin, the third earthly branch, a Wood branch on the yang side. The most recent Tiger year, a Water Tiger, ran from February 1, 2022 to January 21, 2023. The next, a Wood Tiger, begins on February 19, 2034. The Tiger has a particular place in the calendar: the first lunar month, the month of the new year itself, is the Yin month, so every lunar year opens in the Tiger's branch even when the year belongs to another animal. In folklore the Tiger is the king of the beasts, the guardian painted on children's shoes and hats to keep harm away, and Tiger people are pictured as brave, restless and quick to anger. Those portraits are tradition, not a measure of anyone, and this site keeps them apart from the dates, which come from the Hong Kong Observatory tables.

The month of the Tiger

The Hong Kong Observatory's table of months lists the first lunar month as the Yin month, the third as Chen, and so on around the circle; the eleventh, which contains the winter solstice, is Zi. That arrangement has been the civil rule for about two thousand years. It means that a new year, whatever its animal, begins in a Tiger month, and that the Tiger's own double hour, from 3 a.m. to 5 a.m., is the hour before dawn.

Spring Commences, the solar term around February 4, is also the start of the Yin month in the solar reckoning used by Four Pillars astrologers. For them a Tiger year starts at that term and not at the lunar new year; the sign finder lets you compare both rules.

The Tiger in folklore

The character wang, king, is said to be written on the Tiger's forehead in its stripes, and the animal appears on door images meant to frighten evil spirits. Many families in China and Korea dressed infants in tiger hats or tiger shoes for protection. Popular portraits of Tiger people stress courage and impatience; marriage lore pairs them with the Horse and the Dog, their triad, and warns against the Monkey, their opposite. None of it is a forecast.

Two late starts to know

Tiger years can begin as late as mid-February: February 17, 1950 in 1950, and February 19, 2034 for the next one, in 2034. A person born in early February of those years is an Ox.

Every year of the Tiger, with exact dates

Each line is one lunar year, from its new year to the eve of the next. Over sixty years the Tiger comes back five times, once with each element: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. A birth before the start date in that Gregorian year belongs to the Ox.

Questions people ask

When is the next year of the Tiger?

The next year of the Tiger is the Wood Tiger, which begins on February 19, 2034 and ends on February 7, 2035, according to the Hong Kong Observatory conversion tables. After it, the Tiger returns in 2046 as a Fire Tiger; the same element and animal meet again only in 2094.

What kind of Tiger was 2022?

A Water Tiger, Ren-Yin. The year ran from February 1, 2022 to January 21, 2023, according to the Hong Kong Observatory tables. Ren is the yang Water stem, and Yin is the Tiger's branch. The Water Tiger before it was the year that began in 1962, and the next one will begin in 2082.

Which signs does tradition pair with the Tiger?

Folk tradition places the Tiger in a triad with the Horse and the Dog, counted as the warmest match, and pairs it in harmony with the Pig. Its opposite, six years away, is the Monkey, and its harm pair is the Snake. These pairings come from the positions of the branches on a circle and predict nothing about real couples.
