All about the year of the Rat

A year of the Rat is any lunar year whose earthly branch is Zi, the first of the twelve branches, which is why the Rat stands at the head of the cycle. The most recent one, the Metal Rat, ran from January 25, 2020 to February 11, 2021; the next, a Water Rat, begins on February 11, 2032. Because the lunar new year moves between January 21 and February 20, the Gregorian year alone can mislead: someone born on January 20, 2020 is a Pig, not a Rat, since the Rat year had not yet begun. The Hong Kong Observatory, whose conversion tables give every date on this page, names the animal "mouse" in its English pages; American usage says Rat. The temperament attached to the sign, quick, resourceful and thrifty in the usual telling, belongs to folk tradition and describes no one in particular.

Why the Rat comes first

The order of the animals follows the order of the earthly branches, and Zi is branch number one. A popular tale explains it differently: the Jade Emperor held a race, and the Rat rode across the river on the Ox's back, then jumped ahead at the finish. The story is told to children across East Asia in several versions; it is a legend, not the origin of the calendar, which counted years by branches long before animals were attached to them. The Hong Kong Observatory dates the use of twelve-year animal cycles for recording years to about 100 A.D.

The Zi branch also names the double hour that straddles midnight, from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., and the eleventh lunar month, the month that contains the winter solstice.

What tradition says about Rat people

Almanacs and family lore describe people born under the Rat as alert, sociable and good with money, sometimes to the point of hoarding. These portraits vary from one book to the next and from one region to another, and no study supports them as a guide to character. Read them as part of a shared culture, the way Americans read sun-sign columns, not as a description of a person. The compatibility page explains where the pairings come from.

Born in January or February?

Check the start date in the table below before calling yourself a Rat. In 1984 the Rat year began on February 2, 1984, so a baby born on January 15, 1984 belongs to the Water Pig of 1983. In 1996 it began on February 19, 1996. The sign finder settles it from the exact date.

Every year of the Rat, with exact dates

Each line is one lunar year, from its new year to the eve of the next. Over sixty years the Rat comes back five times, once with each element: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. A birth before the start date in that Gregorian year belongs to the Pig.

Lunar new year dates from the Hong Kong Observatory conversion tables, read on November 1, 2026.

Questions people ask

When is the next year of the Rat?

The next year of the Rat is the Water Rat, which begins on February 11, 2032 and ends on January 30, 2033, according to the Hong Kong Observatory conversion tables. After it, the Rat returns in 2044 as a Wood Rat; the same element and animal meet again only in 2092.

Is it the year of the Rat or the year of the Mouse?

Both translations name the same branch, Zi. Chinese uses one word, shu, for rats and mice alike. The Hong Kong Observatory writes "mouse" in its English pages on the animal cycle, while American calendars, greeting cards and the US Postal Service stamp series say "Rat". The sign, its years and its dates are the same.

What element was the 2020 Rat year?

Metal. The year that ran from January 25, 2020 to February 11, 2021 was Geng-Zi, and Geng is the yang Metal stem. Rat years before it were the Fire Rat of 1996 and the Wood Rat of 1984; after it come the Water Rat of 2032 and the Wood Rat of 2044, one element at each return.

Which signs does tradition pair with the Rat?

Folk tradition places the Rat in a triad with the Dragon and the Monkey, counted as the warmest match, and pairs it in harmony with the Ox. Its opposite, six years away, is the Horse, and its harm pair is the Goat. These pairings come from the positions of the branches on a circle and predict nothing about real couples.
